Bearings

The function of the Bearing or wear ring is to guide the piston and piston rod of a hydraulic cylinder, as well as to withstand arising side loads. At the same time, it prevents any metal-to-metal contact, which will damage and score the surfaces and eventually cause seal damage, leakage and component damage.

Hallite offer bearings in various types of materials all of which offer high wear-resistance and demonstrate excellent friction properties.

Our T63 polyacetal wear ring is suitable for both fluid and pneumatic cylinder applications, the T87bronze filled PTFE bearing is suitable for higher temperature applications. A glass filled nylon wear ring (T533) offers high bearing load capacity over a broad range of temperatures, whilst our high strength nylon bearing (T540) is suitable for telescopic applications.

The T506, which is a woven fabric reinforced polyester resin bearing is available in three forms, cut rings, spiral lengths and flat coils, and is compatible with a wide range of fluids, and is used extensively in mining applications.

Norgren FRL Assembly

Filter, regulator, lubricator (FRL) assemblies are pre-pack Filter, regulator and lubricator (FRL) assembly packaged or modular assemblies of air filters, pressure regulators, lubricators, and gauges. Air leaving a compressor is hot, dirty, and wet and can cause damage to equipment and tools if it is not treated.

The filter cleans compressed air by trapping solid particles and separating liquids, such as oil and water, that are entrained in the compressed air. Filters are installed in the air line upstream of regulators, lubricators, and all pneumatically-powered tools and equipment. They remove contaminants from pneumatic systems, preventing damage to equipment and reducing production losses due to contaminant-related downtime.

Pressure regulators control fluid pressure in compressed air systems. Regulators are also known as pressure reducing valves (PRVs). Pressure regulators maintain a constant output pressure regardless of input pressure variations and demands made on the system by downstream components.

Lubricators add controlled quantities of oil into the compressed air system to reduce the friction between moving components within air tools and other equipment that are powered by the system. Adding lubrication oil to the system also clears compressor oils that travel through the system in vapor form. To prevent build-up of oil within system components, mineral oils are added to the system to flush away the deposits.

Downstream equipment flow and pressure requirements determine the correct regulator and lubricator for the application. Manufacturers offer flow characteristics charts on their products to help chose the correct combination of regulators and lubricators.

There are several choices for regulator type.
• General-purpose regulators are designed for typical industrial use; they
generally operate only above atmospheric pressure.
• High-pressure regulators are rated for inlet pressures higher than general
purpose, typically over 1,000 psi.
• Low-pressure regulators have special design characteristics for precise
control of pressures typically below 15-20 psi.
• Differential or bias regulators maintain a pressure differential between two
locations in the system.
• Pressure-reducing valves provide a sub-circuit with a supply of fluid at a
pressure that is less than the pressure in the main circuit.

A butterfly valve is a quarter-turn valve used to regulate flow. A metal disc in the body of the valve is positioned perpendicular to the flow in the closed position, and rotated one quarter of a turn to be parallel to the flow in the fully opened position.

Polyurethane (more commonly referred to as “urethane”) has successfully been used to line pipelines for a wide range of industries because of its ability to resist abrasive wear in many applications such as slurries, pneumatic conveying, hopper isolation, sediment, dry powder, dust extraction, mineral sands, mining, potash and fertilizer.


Urethane seats are primarily used for their ability to resist abrasive wear. Urethane can be used on a reasonably broad range of services. Urethane will withstand severe impact, recover its original shape after distortion and resist abrasion better than other elastomers such as EPDM and BUNA-N.

Rod Seals

The rod seal is the most critical seal on any type of fluid power equipment preventing leakage of fluid from within the cylinder to the outside. Leakage through the rod seal can reduce equipment performance, and also in extreme cases can cause environmental issues.

Hallite offers a wide range of hydraulic rod seals for both single-acting and double-acting systems. These include a unique profiled NBR energised polyurethane (PU) seal, and a specifically designed three element seal for the mining industry comprising of an O-ring energiser, PU shell and a polyacetal anti-extrusion ring.

Particular attention should be paid to pair the rod seal and the wiper for the best sealing performance. If a less aggressive rod seal is paired with an aggressive wiper, the wiper can scrape off the microscopically thin film of oil that remains on the rod in microscopic surface imperfections during the return stroke, resulting in system leakage.

Single Acting Piston Seals

Piston Seals or Piston Rings are used in hydraulic cylinders for fluid sealing and are designed to ensure that pressurised fluid does not leak across the cylinder head as the system pressure pushes the piston down the cylinder bore.

The choice of piston seal is decided by the way in which the cylinder operates. For a cylinder which is exclusively single-acting, capable of sealing dynamic pressure from one side (unidirectional), it is always best to choose the type of seal designed to provide optimum sealing qualities for single-acting functions.

The best sealing capacity of a double-acting cylinder, capable of sealing dynamic pressure from both sides (bidirectional), is achieved by choosing a double-acting seal.

A piston design where two single-acting seals on the piston for a double-acting cylinder are used can easily give rise to a breakdown. The reason is that a very high pressure can be trapped between the seals.

Piston seals, both single and double-acting, can be designed for and used with integrated or separate back-up rings and guide rings.

Wipers

Wipers are installed in the sealing configurations of hydraulic cylinders to prevent contaminants such as dirt, dust and moisture from entering the cylinder as they retract back into the system.

Contamination can cause significant damage to the rod, cylinder wall, seals, and other components, and is one of the primary causes of premature seal and component failure in a fluid power system.

Hallite offer a wide range of hydraulic wipers in High Performance Hallite® 361 polyurethane, Nitrile®, Hythane® 181 and other polyester based materials, along with press-fit metal caged ranges.

The wiper seal is the most undervalued seal type in the hydraulic cylinder in relation to its important function. Particular attention should be drawn to its selection, the surrounding environment and service conditions must also be taken into special consideration.

Rod Buffer Seals

The primary purpose of the buffer seal is to protect the main rod seal from the effects of shock pressure loading.

It is important that the buffer seal allows adequate lubrication of the main seal and does not cause a pressure trap between itself and the main seal. The Hallite designs of buffer seals have features that help to prevent this possibility.

Buffer Rings

Buffer Rings buffer the pressure spikes of hydraulic systems. They act as a primary rod seal, and at the same time enable trapped fluid sealed by the secondary seal, which is down stream of the buffer, to be pumped back into the system. When a buffer ring is used in combination with a lip seal, the resulting sealing system provides long life with an exceptionally dry rod. Buffer seals are commonly used for rod seal application only.

Oil Seals

 Oil Seals are used to create a tight seal and prevent hydraulic fluid from leaking.

Piston Cups

Primarily used on piston heads, plungers or rams in hydraulic or pneumatic service. Its mechanical sealing surface is at its periphery.


Commonly used because of economical cost, excellent service life, efficient assemble, universal acceptance, and simple accessories.
 

Piston cups are constructed of rubberized fabric. Cups with no hole are center punched.

U-Seals

U-cups are a lip seal, named for the cross-section’s distinctive “U” shape. They are used for both dynamic and static applications. The “U” shape energizes the sealing lips as the application pressure increases. This brilliant design has been modified to create several unique configurations. These modifications provide additional benefits for a variety of applications.

Wipers & Scrapers

Wipers are primarily designed to stop contaminants from entering a cylinder on the rod, however, they can also act as a secondary rod seal. If contaminants were allowed to enter the cylinder it could lead to damage of your rod and/or the damage of other sealing components. A properly selected wiper could help reduce the need for unscheduled maintenance and even increase the time between maintenance cycles.

Application: Our workhorse material, DURLON® 8500 is excellent in steam, natural gas, soybean processing and with new generation refrigerants. A high quality general service gasket material for use in a wide range of services in pulp and paper, food, beverage, pharmaceutical, chemical, refinery, gas pipeline and general industry.DURLON® 8500 exhibits good compressibility and recovery, excellent sealability, flexibility and cutting characteristics.

Composition: DURLON® 8500 contains high-strength aramid and inorganic fibers bonded with high-grade Nitrile (NBR) rubber.

Fire testing: DURLON® 8500 has successfully passed a modified version of the API 607 fire test. The duration of the direct flame portion of the test is 30 minutes and the flange temperature must reach 1200°F in the first 15 minutes. The internal pressure is held at a constant 30 psig. After the flame is shut off, the fixture is immediately water quenched with an overhead water blast. Leakage must not exceed 100 ml/min after a 6 minute cool down to successfully pass the test. Subsequent leakage testing is also performed.

Anti-stick properties: Much effort has gone into improving the anti-stick release agents of all compressed DURLON® products. All DURLON® compressed gasket materials have passed the MIL-G-24696B Navy Adhesion Test (366°F/48 hrs).

Vee Packs

Vee pack sets are multiple-lip (chevron) seals, usually composed of a male and female adaptor and a group of three or five vee rings, are popular for sealing rods and pistons in medium to heavy duty applications and are compatible with both single and double acting cylinders.

Unitized Pistons

The Hallite Type 720 is a ready to fit complete piston. The steel piston has a non-metallic bearing material moulded over the outer diameter using a special proprietary process. It is then finish machined to provide a tight tolerance with the bore of the tube and also for the installation of the chosen seal.

O-Rings

The O-ring is the most widely used seal in industry today. It is simple in concept, easy to install, can be used as a double-acting seal, can seal pressures to over 5,000 psi in static and dynamic applications and, best of all, is very economical.While simple in concept, it can be very sophisticated in its applications. O-rings are available in 349 standard inch sizes as set up by the Aerospace Standard 568 published by the society of Automotive Engineers.

T-Seals & Capped T-Seals

The Capped T-seal (CTS) is a double-acting, high pressure, high performance piston seal, which is designed to accommodate large extrusion gaps. The major benefits of this design are its excellent extrusion resistance, low friction and low wear, all presented in a compact and stable design.
